What is hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy
is type of psychotherapy in which a deep relaxed & focused state of mind is
induced by the hypnotherapist. This state is called Trance. The state of trance
is used for diagnosis and / or treatment of psychoemotional complaints. It can
also be used for better mental health, better control over mind and better
mental functioning. It is a powerful technique which can enable one to think,
feel and act better. Hypnotherapy is a strong technique as it uses the enormous
power of mind.
How hypnotherapy works
Human
mind has enormous potential most of which remain untapped. Mind is like an
iceberg, 90 % of which remain hidden. The 10% visible part is the conscious
mind which helps in perceiving environment, short term memory and thinking. The
remaining 90 % is the subconscious mind which is responsible for long term
memory, learning, emotions, habitual patterns, learned behavior etc.
Subconscious mind stores memories and associated emotions. This helps mind in
‘learning’ how to feel and behave in a particular situation. It even influences
conscious mind. Our past learning and memory affects our present thinking and
behavior.
Positive
mental health, mental calmness, confidence, correct thinking, positive habits,
emotions & behavior all this depends on how well this subconscious mind is
organized. The better this subconscious mind is organized, better is its growth
with age with minimum or no conflicts. But in case of some disorganization due
to poor learning or some traumatic incidents, the conflicts because of this
results in deficient mental functioning or undesirable behavior. This is where
hypnotherapy comes to help. It helps in better reorganization of subconscious
minds thereby eliminating conflicts, past traumas and negative learned patterns.
It separates unhealthy emotions & behavior from past memory and replace
with healthy emotions & behavior. The outcome is positive thinking, healthy
emotions and desirable behavior.
Is
hypnotherapy scientific
Hypnotherapy
has been proved to be scientific. There has been extensive research and its
results are seen to be significantly positive. It has been accepted and
recommended by world’s most reputed healthcare organizations like American
Medical Association, American Psychological Association, National Institute of
Health, USA. Research studies have been shown to have positive effect on human
mind and body. Some of the positive changes observed are brain imaging changes,
physiological changes, immunological changes, EEG changes, Neurotransmitter changes
etc.

Myths about hypnotherapy
Some
people are not clear about what happens during hypnotherapy sessions. This
leads to many myths and unwanted fears about hypnotherapy. Few facts about
hypnotherapy sessions are:
• Will I go to sleep?
The
person under hypnotherapy does not sleep. He or she is fully awake and aware of
self and surroundings.
• Will I be under control of
hypnotherapist?
The
person under hypnotherapy is never under control of hypnotherapist. Self
control remains throughout the session and after.
• Will I be made to do things which I
do not want?
Hypnotherapy
can not make you do anything against your will.
• Can I get ‘stuck’ and not come out?
There is
no question of ‘not coming out of hypnotic state’ because one is never in a
state which is not normal. Trance is not like sleep or unconsciousness from
which one is required to ‘come out’. It is a state of higher mental awareness
and concentration which is a normal awakened state.
• Will I be able to get hypnotized?
Almost
everyone can be hypnotized but no one can be hypnotized against will.
• Can it harm me?
Just like
any other treatment, if it is done by ‘quacks’ unqualified & badly trained
persons, it can cause harm. See precautions and past life regression therapy
above. There are many commercial unscientific ‘uses’ for which hypnotherapy is
getting exploited. In contrast it is a very safe and powerful therapy if done
by well qualified and trained mental health professionals.
• Will it change my judgment and value
system?
It is a
matter of choice what one wishes to change in his or her subconscious mind. It is not possible to change one’s
morals, beliefs, values or identity.
What is Hypnotherapy
Introduction
to Hypnotherapy – Philosophy of the Healthcare
Hypnotherapy
is a psychological therapy which includes spoken interactions between the
clients and the therapists. During the therapy, hypnosis is induced – it is a
state of mind in which the person’s subconscious gets to communicate with the
conscious mind. The way one interacts and accesses the personal potentials is
quite wonderful. There is a very simple basic concept behind the procedure of
hypnotherapy. It is a very simple procedure through which one is able to access
one’s inner potential or capacity. The fundamental idea behind the procedure of
hypnotherapy is simple and it is to give suggestions in a direct way to the
mind’s unconscious portion.
When the patient meets with his therapist for the
first time, they discuss the patient’s issues they want to focus on and the
therapist makes a treatment plan for the patient and provides him with proper
explanations about events that are meant to take place afterward. In a usual
period of hypnotherapy, the therapist usually asks various questions about the
past history, lifestyle and overall health condition of the patient. Reaching
the subconscious mind is the main aim of hypnotherapy. It facilitates an
individual in relaxing his body and also calming the person’s mind by enhancing
the connection between body and mind. Positive views and idea are reinforced by
the therapist. This simply allows one to achieve a calm and delighted state of
mind. It facilitates one in changing the negative aspects of the thought
process. It also changes and facilitates previous habits and their patterns in
order to allow one to get over one’s fears and phobias.
The patient’s
comfort with the therapy and his convenience are the most important aspects of
physiotherapy. This is of chief importance in the process of Hypnotherapy which
includes the main focus towards the value of the treatment as a result of the
patient’s confidence in the respective therapist. The process of hypnosis
cannot be performed on the patient if he does not give his consent. During an
ongoing session of hypnotherapy, a person is able to hear all that is being
said and can give immediate response and participate in the session in an
active manner.
It is up
to the patient to decide whether or not to go with the advice of the
hypnotherapist. If during the hypnotherapy, the patient feels uncomfortable
with the procedure, he or she can immediately have the session stopped and can
get out of the state by just opening his or her eyes.
Types of Hypnotherapies:
There are
many different types of hypnotherapies including traditional hypnotherapy,
hypnoanalysis, Ericksonian hypnotherapy, Cognitive or behavioral hypnotherapy
and new age hypnotherapy. The traditional hypnotherapy process chiefly uses the
direct suggestion of the removal of symptoms making use of the technique of
therapeutic relaxation. Ericksonian hypnotherapy makes use of standard informal
approach which is conversational with many patients and has complex therapeutic
strategies and language patterns. Hypnoanalysis is Breuer and Freud’s
therapeutic process which is used to regress the client’s to an earlier time
for the sake of helping them in remembering and correction of apparent
traumatic memories. Behavioral or Cognitive hypnotherapy is used by some
therapists in combination with some workers. New age hypnotherapy consists of
many pseudoscientific methods in order to carry out the therapy which is quite
similar to the process called “Mesmerism”
Research on Hypnotherapy
The
British Journal, in 1999, published the relaxation therapy and hypnotherapy
current medical research clinical review and it concludes that there is very
pertinent evidence of common trials of the efficiency of hypnosis and
relaxation for curing cancer causes pains, anxiety, side-effects of
chemotherapy and vomiting, especially among children. These therapies also
prove to be effective for curing insomnia and panic disorders, especially when
they are combined with a series of cognitive therapies which could include
sleep hygiene as well. The ability of hypnosis to enhance the promising effects
of cognitive behavioral treatment for conditions like obesity, anxiety or
phobias is considered very strong. Trials that are randomly controlled also
support the implementation of different techniques for the sake of the
treatment of both chronic and acute pains. The hypnosis is considered to be
quite valuable, after carrying out random trials, in the treatment of irritable
bowel syndrome as well as asthma. It is also claimed by some practitioners that
techniques of relaxation, especially the usage of imagery have the power to
prolong life, however, there is no sufficient evidence for supporting this
claim.
A report
on the nature of hypnotherapy was submitted in 1999 and the working committee
provided a summary of some very important research on the benefit and
efficiency of clinical hypnotherapy which includes convincing evidence that
hypnotherapy is useful in managing and relieving both chronic and acute pains
and in helping to alleviate pain, distress and discomfort caused childbirth and
by dental and medical procedures. The process of hypnosis or self-hypnotherapy
can be used for the purpose of reducing general anxiety by a significant level.
Stress and tensions of manner like other self-regulation and relaxation
procedures are also very good for healthy a lifestyle. It also helps in
treating insomnia. There is also enough evidence for depicting the benefits of
hypnotherapeutic sessions in relieving the symptoms of a number of issues that
come under the category of psychosomatic illnesses
How Hypnotherapy works:
Hypnotherapy
consists of inducing a focused state of mind which is quite attentive and uses
tools like lasers as a substitute for ordinary home light. This process is
carried out in four steps which include induction of the state of trance,
proposing solutions, a session of suggestions after that hypnotic session and
the fourth and final step is of evaluating the patient during which the
therapist evaluates the changes that are needed for the patient’s betterment.
In this process, the main aim is to achieve a whole new habit of carrying out
the paperwork. This process, or modality, is comprised of a large number of
applications. Some of these include improved habits of studying, relieving test
anxiety, overcoming phobias and fears, enhancing effective interactions, better
sales techniques, preparation for surgery or childbirth, anger management,
happiness, increased self-esteem and so on.
How Hypnotherapy Works?
Hypnotherapy
has no side effects and is, therefore, a comparatively safe way of curing
diverse issues. During this procedure, the individual is usually in the
management of the phenomenon that are happening and is never forced to undergo
something he is not comfortable with. In order to understand the mechanics of
the working of hypnotherapy, one is first required to be aware of the
subconscious and conscious mind. The human mind is composed of two parts which
are called conscious and subconscious mind. The conscious mind is composed of
the logical and rational thinking apparatus and it registers and analyses
different situations and gives response by observing control over daily life
decision taking whereas the subconscious mind is a domain that rules over the
intuition and emotions and gives response to the way by which it may be
programmed in the earlier part of life.
Hypnotherapy
achieves its goal by the creation of a state which is similar to trance but the
individual is fully aware of the happenings around him and is supposed to only
concentrate on the voice that leads the hypnotherapeutic process. The
hypnotherapist is not authorized to go through any procedure without the will
and consent of the patient. Once the hypnosis starts and the patient achieved
the state of trance, the first thing to be done by the hypnotherapist is to
negate all the previous suggestions given to the patient regarding his
condition and provide their substitutes which are more advances, healthier and
thus better. The next step is for the therapist to figure out the causes by
which the problem is triggered.
After he
comes up with the real cause of the disturbances, the hypnotherapist then has
various procedures and methods which are designed to help an individual in
exploring the main experience or episode and then heal and get a new
perspective of the issue which is strengthened by better and positive
proposals.
In a
usual period of hypnotherapy, the therapist usually asks various questions
about the past history, lifestyle and overall health condition of the patient.
Reaching the subconscious mind is the main aim of hypnotherapy. It facilitates
an individual in relaxing his body and also calming the person’s mind by
enhancing the connection between body and mind. Positive views and idea are
reinforced by the therapist. This simply allows one to achieve a calm and
delighted state of mind. It facilitates one in changing the negative aspects of
the thought process. It also changes and facilitates previous habits and their
patterns in order to allow one to get over one’s fears and phobias.
Hypnotherapy is a very meek procedure through which one is able to access one’s
inner potential or capacity.
The
fundamental idea behind the procedure of hypnotherapy is simple and it is to
give suggestions in a direct way to the mind’s unconscious portion. When the
patient meets with his therapist for the first time, they discuss the patient’s
issues they want to focus on and the therapist makes a treatment plan for the
patient and provides him with proper explanations about events that are meant
to take place afterward. Hypnotherapy also helps one transcend the conscious
mind and the ego in order to allow the individual to get rid of his own ways
and tech the unconscious mind some new ways. An important aspect is that, by
using hypnotherapy, one can gain access to the special assets one might not
have been familiar with in the past even though they have been there for a long
time.
The
interesting aspect of hypnotherapy is that it is quite effective. This is
because once the hypnotherapist gives a suggestion, it is registered and
visualized in the subconscious mind. It is accepted by the mind as if it were
true. An example of this is that a person who is addicted to smoking for many
years can stop smoking altogether without ever feeling the urge to smoke.
Hypnosis for Smokers
When the
session of hypnosis for termination of the habit of smoking is carried out, the
individual is usually asked to envision unpleasant circumstances produced as a
result of smoking. For example, the patient may be told that the smoke of the
cigarette smells like smoke or exhaust of trucks. A popular method of relieving
the habit of smoking is called Spiegel’s method which involves the ideas that
body is poisoned by smoking, the body needs to live and one should respect for
one’s body and take care of it.
Insomnia and Sleep Hypnosis
Curing
insomnia and conducting sleep hypnosis come under the category of application
of hypnotherapy for the sake of changing different behaviors. Considering the
various alternatives and holistic therapies, hypnotherapy or hypnosis is being
used for treating insomnia and is now much more easily accessible as compared
to before. Many times in the past, hypnotherapy has been utilized in order to
get rid of acute pain and minor or major discomfort. Additionally, it also
helps in overcoming alcohol addiction, smoking, and drug addiction.

How is
Hypnotherapy so Effective?
In a usual

are reinforced by the therapist.
Hypnotherapy for Quitting Smoking
Even if
an individual is used to smoking for like a day or more than fifty years,
hypnotherapy is by far the most pertinent and successful method to get rid of
the habit of smoking. It can be achieved with great ease and with no
side-effects or chances of a relapse. The procedure can be completed in a
matter of just an hour and the person can be relieved of his habit of smoking.
Most of the hypnotherapy sessions have come out to be 95 percent successful. If
an individual wants to lose his weight without strenuous exercises or dieting,
and without having any feelings of being deprived, hypnotherapy is a perfect
way to change one’s habits of excessive eating. By the removal of unnecessary
blockages in the success of the patient, treating negative emotions and feeling
and one’s negative thoughts about one’s body and longing for junk food, this
can be easily achieved. The hypnotherapist can help the patient by increasing
his desire for healthy and natural foods, exercise and water consumption. Therefore,
this can prove to be a very beneficial and lasting way of staying healthy and
slim.
Hypnotherapy for Stress Reduction
Success
A state
of deep comfort and relaxation can be achieved and the person feels very
relaxed and stress-free as a result. It is considered a very useful and
pertinent procedure for achieving a calmer state of mind and being refreshed
and more positive. A person’s mind can be reprogrammed or rebooted as well by
hypnotherapy for achieving success in all fields of life whether they are
personal or professional. The therapy helps in creating the best possible
future for the patient. The main obstacle in the way of success could be an
individual’s anxious or depressed state of mind. Sometimes we become very harsh
with ourselves and beat ourselves up over the things that are not even in our
control. This negative attitude really affects one mental health and
self-esteem.
A person encounters approximately over 50.000 thoughts in the span
of a day and majority of these thoughts could be negative, thus destroying
one’s mental peace. Hypnotherapy, therefore, is a good way of rebooting or
reframing the pessimistic thought patterns and also keeps us free from any
mental prisons that we don’t want to be in. The therapy helps us move on in life
and look at life with a better and more positive approach. Hypnotherapy helps a
person to make a conscious effort in entertaining life-affirming, empowering
thoughts and, actions.
Myths and Facts Regarding
Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy
There are
many commonly perceived misconceptions and misunderstandings regarding
hypnotherapy and hypnosis. These make people unsure of the procedure and make
them question its validity. Some of the common myths about hypnotherapy include
the idea that hypnosis is an abnormal and unnatural process. However, the real
fact is that hypnosis is quite naturally occurring physical and mental
procedure and it takes place spontaneously and periodically throughout
everyone’s daily life and all by itself. Another myth is that the person undergoing
hypnotherapy is asleep during the procedure. However, the fact is that the
person is completely awake or conscious during the procedure of hypnosis. A
person who is hypnotized is completely awake and is supposed to be conscious
and mindful of the happenings around him.
There is a commonly believed myth
that an individual can get “stuck” within a hypnotized state and could be
unable to get out of it. The fact of the matter is that it is impossible for a
person to get stuck in a state of hypnosis and being unable to escape it. The
possibility is of an individual drifting into naturally induced sleep for a
matter of five or ten minutes and then the person wakes up by himself. The next
myth is that the process of hypnosis is unsafe. The fact that busts this myth
is that hypnotherapy is actually quite safe and makes use of an effective
variety of techniques which help an individual in enhancing his file,
accomplish more things and thus feel better about himself. Hypnosis is a
trance-like state that is natural, positive and beneficial for the patient.
Busting
Some Ridiculous Myths Regarding Hypnotherapy
There is
a myth is that hypnosis can be harmful for health and that only those people
can be hypnotized who are mentally disturbed or challenged. However, the fact
is that hypnosis can never be harmful for the patient’s health as it is a state
which is naturally occurring. The issue is that a number of doctors make the
people believe that they need to learn to relax and unwind, but they never
actually provide them with the tools that are required for learning
self-soothing and relaxation techniques. Therefore, hypnosis is the best state
one could be in if he wants to feel in harmony with his inner self and the
world around him. As far as hypnosis being confined to the treatment of only
mentally challenged people is concerned, the fact is that people who are normal
and completely healthy can go into the state of hypnosis with more ease as they
can easily register the instructions, have a creative imagination and can
concentrate better than the mentally challenged ones.
There is a common myth
that hypnosis is a supernatural phenomenon and thus has special powers. The
fact is that hypnosis is a natural procedure and does not have any special
powers. The hypnotherapists just have access to the pertinent knowledge and
experience with many humans. With sufficient practice and effort, many people
can induce hypnosis themselves as well. There is a similar myth; hypnosis is a
form of magic or black magic. This is quite ridiculous as there is no relation
between hypnosis and magic. It is a natural condition or state which has been
observed scientifically. The hypnotherapists are trained therapists and have no
relations with psychics, special powers or palm readers. Many years of
scientific research by well-known psychologists like Dr. Carl Jung, Dr. Sigmund
Freud, Dr. John Kappas and Dr. Milton form the basis of hypnotherapy. People
with many insecurities tend to believe the myth that hypnosis may make them do
inappropriate or embarrassing acts such as walking like a duck or barking like
a dog. This misconception is formed by Hollywood fiction and Stage Hypnotism.
The reality is that these people usually act on stage voluntarily and willingly
take part in silly activities. Hypnotherapy is nothing like that and is a
serious technique which helps in self-improvement instead of silly
entertainment. There is another common belief that the patient’s mind may be
controlled and manipulated by the hypnotherapist. This is absurd because no one
has the ability to control another being’s mind without the patient’s consent
or approval. The hypnotist provides the recipient with relevant suggestions
that he needs on the basis of the pre-hypnotic evaluation. The patient, at no
point in the session, loses his or her mind. If the patient is given a
suggestion which is not acceptable to him, it will automatically be rejected by
the subconscious mind. There is also a misconception that hypnosis provides a
miraculous cure. Although permanent and quick improvements may be made with
hypnosis.
There is no such thing as a miracle that could occur just after one
sitting. Every individual is different and makes progress at his own time. One
should not blindly believe the people who wildly claim to have achieved success
overnight. If a person is scared of undergoing hypnosis because he has never
experienced it before, it is safe to mention that everybody naturally enters a
hypnotic state at least two times every day; upon awakening each morning,
before getting out of bed and before going to sleep at night. Majority of the
people easily achieve a state of environmental hypnosis while watching TV,
driving on the highway, while reading a good book or while at the movie cinema.
Another
common misconception is that hypnosis could be used to get someone to confess.
This is wrong because the hypnotic sessions cannot be used for court
testimonies and are thus kept private. A person’s vulnerabilities cannot be
exploited and the therapy is not used as polygraphs or lie detector tests. One
cannot be “forced” to tell the truth by the hypnotherapist as it is considered
a violation of the privacy of the client. It is also commonly believed that a
person is not hypnotized if he can hear the therapist, but that is how hypnotism
works – you are partially or fully awake but also in a state of trance.
